CatalinaByrd.com launched March 19, 2009 on Catalina’s 28th birthday. Initially it was to act as home base for all of the various articles and links to appearances that Catalina had been doing since returning to Baltimore and making a commitment to lend her unique perspective to the discussion on behalf of a generation that typically isn’t politically inclined. The Byrd’s Nest had a series of popular articles during its 6 month run with the Baltimore Examiner, The Reporter’s Roundtable first season featured Catalina as a regular on Channel 75 & 77 (Baltimore), and Catalina even returned to the place of her beginning as writer, radio personality, and video interviewer for BmoreNews.com. All of these activities kept Catalina busy and still she didn’t feel like she was doing enough, it was in these feelings that Catalina’s greatest accomplishment to date came about.
In June Catalina began On Point, a radio program that followed immediately after her friend and mentor’s long time staple of Baltimore talk radio – Doni Glover’s Empower Hour on WOLB 1010 AM. Developing the platform around the two things that Catalina is most passionate about, politics and the arts, and targeting the 18-35 voter in a whole new way. Using artists, community leaders, social activists, and elected officials On Point creates an engaging and informative panel to discuss the hottest issues. Adament in her belief that it doesn’t matter how you vote so long as you still avail yourself of the process Catalina created a show that is not driven by any one perspective, and all are welcome. As On Point prepares to wrap its first season on December 15, 2009, Catalina is proud to have brought the likes of everyone from the legendary Gil Scott Heron to Grammy-nominated recording artists Foreign Exchange and from the political side Rev. Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, Del. Barbara Robinson, and Michelle Wirzberger of the Community Law Center. Always in support of the arts On Point even reported live on location from Poets In The Park and Storytellers Anniversary in Baltimore that featured other artists that also have appeared.
When On Point returns January 5, 2010 it will be with the same commitment to political empowerment of this generation typically not thought of for insightful political thinking or consistent action. On Point’s success also made it possible for Catalina to do more feature appearances as well such as that of The Anthony McCarthy Show and Square Off with Richard Sher. Catalina Byrd, LLC is looking into the approaching year with excitement, focus, and appreciation for support of its mission.
Catalina’s first video interview ever for BmoreNews.com was the evening of the Maryland State Primary Election in 2006 at Eden’s Lounge, that interview was with Billy Murphy, Esq. Just a little more than three years later Catalina began appearing on Square Off with Richard Sher which was returned to television by none other than Billy Murphy and The Murphy Firm. Below that first video is posted, then watch Square Off Sunday’s at 9:30am and 6:30pm on WMAR-ABC 2 Baltimore, everything begins somewhere – for Catalina in regards to on camera, it was on this night.
Catalina and the rest of her associates have come great lengths with this cause and plan to continue to do as much and more when On Point returns in January, same time, same place…
